When a police officer or federal agent calls you and asks to speak with you, what should you do? It depends. In the eyes of law enforcement, a person falls into three categories: (1) a witness; (2) a subject; and (3) a target. Police officers see a “witness” as someone who can provide useful information but who likely did nothing wrong. They see a “target” as someone who likely did violate the law and will likely be charged with a crime. A “subject” is someone who is in neither classification. What your status is will determine how you interact with law enforcement. Andy has the skill to determine what your status is and, if possible in the particular case, to move your status from “target” to a “witness.”
